What a great day out we had at the Norwood Park Centenary.
We hope everyone who came really enjoyed it and we would love to hear your comments.
This was a chance for the local community to enjoy the past, present and future of the park.
Over the four hour event hundreds of people turned out to celebrate the park's birthday.
The Gypsy horse drawn carriage rides, and fortune teller were big hits along with the popcorn!
Our live acts The Fallen Heroes, and Tin Pan Annie played to packed tents by the end of the event and entertainer Sorcha Ra ended with a fitting finale juggling fire.
The free tea dance fayre provided by Athraa in the park cafe went down a treat and we are really grateful to the police and fire brigade for turning out.
Radio Lollipop who ran the fete raised £500 from the day for children's hospital Great Ormond Street.
The vintage police Morris Minor was a great reminder of the past, while the many and varied sports activities gave a flavour of what the park has to offer.
Particular thanks to Big Man Boxing, the London Frescoball Project, Michael Defoe from Greenhouse, Chelsea FC Foundation, Diverse Dance Studios, Archer Jehad Shamis, the Virgo Fidelis cheerleaders, and Richard Radford, PE teacher from Norwood School who took many of the Centenary pictures featured.
The sports day was great fun and it was really nice to see so many happy content young faces receiving medals for their sporting prowess.
We must also thank Anthony Dalton who ran the sports day and the Winks family.
Paul and his father, are the direct descendants of Harry Green who one of the cups was named after.
Harry Green, marathon runner, won an Olympic gold medal in 1912 and won the first London marathon.
We would like to thank them for attending and presenting the prizes.
Harry's grandson Paul, who ran this year's London marathon for charity, said: "We thoroughly enjoyed the day, thanks for getting us involved."
The other cups were named after Olympians: tennis ace Lady Crosfield and wrestler George Hackenschmid.
John Cotter and his Country Walk Team had a good day raising £200 towards their coffers with MP Tessa Jowell contributing to the final amount by buying a rabbit fur coat from!
Here are a few comments from the event:
"I think people really enjoyed the Palmist and Gipsy Group. I spoke to a woman whose grandparents were gipsy’s.”

“I spoke with three young people who travelled from North London to the park.”

“I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and seeing the children proudly wear their medals.”

“I enjoyed the inclusive feel to the day.”

“I loved the horse and cart ride.”

“This event is just what this park needs.”

“What a lovely park. Definitely come again.”

“Great games. My daughter won a prize!”

“Never tried Frescoball before. Good fun!”

“Thought that lady on stilts was a real person with long legs!”

“It was just like a village fete. Terrific. All those children's games to play.”

“Tea Dance with a proper band. I really enjoyed that. The Friends should do it again.”

“Masses to do everywhere.”

“I won two coconuts at the stall. Love coconut.”

“Fancy Chelsea Football coming all the way here. I support Chelsea.”

An 86-year-old said about the tea dance: "I've had a lovely afternoon. It took me back to fond memories of my young days."

Another senior citizen said: "Thank you ever so much, it was lovely to come and dance with my friends."

Yet another pensioner said: "We had such fun dancing, and what a lovely tea!" A kid said" I liked dancing with my Grandma, she's good."

“My daughter and wife both had a consultation with the clairvoyant. When my daughter came out she was stunned by what she'd been .

“My daughter is a talented musician. She plays flute and saxophone and sings and is being fast tracked through flute grade exams by her school, where she has performed solos at concerts. She's less keen on the Sax, though, and we've struggled to get her to practice. I've basically had to bribe her to stick at it, on the promise I'll pay for singing lessons - which she really wants - if she keeps going.

“The psychic couldn't have known anything about this - and yet she launched straight into a monologue about how music was everywhere in my daughter’s future.

“She was going to go places. The bit I liked was that the fortune teller told my daughter, 'You play two instruments and it's important you keep going with both of them...' Hurrah! How is it that a soothsayer can achieve in a couple of seconds something I've been trying to for months?

“On a less reassuring note, my wife - who also found her reading impressively accurate - was told that in the future she'll be re-marrying and moving back up north (she's from Newcastle). This obviously puts a slightly worrying spin on the state of our relationship. Or it could be an indirect way of pointing out that I don't have long to live...”
