Home Growers

The Friends of Norwood Park have transformed land either side of the Pergola in the park in to a home growing area for local people to grow their own veggies.
The Friends have built raised beds with local people being offered a on metre square plot to grow vegetables and flowers in.
Anyone interested in joining should contact The Friends or turn up on Sunday mornings.
Home growers have to sign a basic contract but there is no charge involved and tools for gardening are supplied free.
We are being assisted in the project by Master Gardeners who offer advice to new growers.
We have been really excited about how successful the project has been and the rewards we have reaped in the shape of: potatoes, courgettes, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, radishes, broccoli, cabbage, onions, shallots, sweetcorn and a few beans.
The majority of the vegetables have been grown from seed.
Home grower Andrea, is particularly excited by the pumpkins growing on the main community patch.
"I've never grown pumpkins before," she said. "I am hoping that we will have a few left for Halloween but unfortunately several have already been stolen. I can only think that passers by think they are melons as they look similar in colour but they are by no means ready to eat as pumpkins and must taste pretty awful!"
If you are the phantom pumpkin thief perhaps you could join in and grow your own instead. We can give you some help on what to grow and when your crop is ready to harvest and eat!
To see what a bumper crop we have had in out first year check out the size of some of our courgettes in these pictures.
