Country Walk

Across the north side of the park is a feature unique in a London park – a Country Walk.

It is used by nature lovers, schools, young parents giving their infants a first taste of nature, joggers, dog walkers and local groups for al fresco meetings.

The walk has been created, funded, and maintained by Norwood Wildlife Team who work on it every Saturday from 1-4pm rain or shine and all around the year.

Since the project started in April, 2001, they have created an avenue of native fruit trees, country hedging, thickets of wild roses, ferneries, pond and bog and small meadows.

All connected by a woodchip path edged with logging and eleven sitting areas, all made from sections of tree trunks and including a “classroom” seating 30 plus and a willow arbour for bird watching.

The team leader, John Cotter, urgently needs more volunteers to cope with this three acre site, make good heavy losses from theft and vandalism and to finally achieve the long -term aims: “A perfect Piece of Countryside with all the trees, wild flowers and ferns once native to London”.

If you wish to join in just turn up in old clothes and choose just about any job you feel like. For more information, ring John on 0208 244 8724.

Beginners are just as welcome as expert gardeners (one beginner learned enough to become gardener to West Dulwich parish church).

And everything stops for tea, biscuits and a chat at 2.30pm!

It details wild flowers seeds they harvest and sell (from £1 per pkt) and 50 odd tools and equipment they hire out (from £2 per tool per week).

They also sell blackberry plants (£1 each). All the proceeds to run the walk.
